Cafe Church | Cole Street Methodist Church

Café church is a type of church service that incorporates a relaxed café atmosphere, including refreshments, to create a more approachable and informal setting for worship and fellowship. It's designed to be friendly and accessible, especially for those new to church or those who haven't been for a while.

Our Café church services have run for a good number of years and continue to be popular. We aim to hold them monthly (usually the third Sunday of the month) as well as on special days such as Mothering Sunday Day and Father’s Day. While the atmosphere is more informal and relaxed, the main ingredients of worship remain such as prayers, songs, free-will offering and reading but tend to be done in a modern format, involving drama, film and creative activity.

The café element comes from the change in seating arrangements, where the normal rows are dispensed with and coffee tables (usually with biscuits on them!) appearing. There is usually a variety of activities for all ages to participate in from table prayers to colouring activities or wordsearches and other creative options.

Because of this, refreshments are available throughout the service at any time. All of this helps people to feel more ‘at home’ while in church. If you haven’t been to church before, this is definitely a service for you!

These services are usually led from the Chancel at Cole Street, with words, images and video projected onto the overhead screens and last between 45 minutes to an hour. They might also involve a fair amount of congregation participation!

We aim to provide a friendly and accessible space for people to explore faith, connect with others, and learn about Christianity in a less daunting way.
